Fort Wayne Ice Storm

What's a good ol' Southern Boy to do trapped in an Indiana ice storm. Limbs are down. Power is out. My VW was transformed into a giant gray ice cube. I chipped the ice from the windshield like we use to chip at frozen ice trays in the freezer. It's actually lots of fun and beautiful to witness.

I want to look like Steve Jobs

The look for sixty-ish gurus and intellectuals are co-opting to make them look more intense and brainy is black a la the photo shown here of Steve Jobs, president of Apple Computers. Also, the choice of glasses is all important with Steve sporting rimless round frames. Nice look. Thomas Friedman author and columnist for the New York Times has adopted this look as well, shown here in the newest press photo, exuding brainy-ness. Taking their lead, you will notice that for my formal photo, I adopted the look as well. It works, don't it? Please say yes.

New Sixty Magazine Cover

Some time ago, I moved back to Little Rock and met up with an old friend of mine, Alan Leverett, publisher of the Arkansas Times. He asked me what I wanted to do and I drew a blank. Then it came to me: let’s do a special publication targeted to people like me - sixty-ish folks who believe they have a lot more living to do yet. Now, about three months later, the magazine is in production and is expected to be out mid-January!

What is The New Sixty

I don’t know about you, but just because I am closing in on retirement, I am absolutely not interested in reading about how to pre-select a cemetery plot or move money into a tax-free trust account for the grandkids. Don’t call me a Senior Citizen. I am not living the Golden Years nor do I have One Foot in the Grave. Yuk.

What I can say is that over the past year, I have had more fun than I’ve had in a long, long time. I discovered that having fun is not a function of how much money you have or the car you drive. It doesn’t really matter if you’re married or single, gay or straight, own a dog or cat. You don’t even have to be that good looking.

Deep down, we all want to fill our lives with "Butterfly Moments." Remember when you were young and stupid, falling desperately, head over heels, I can’t eat or sleep, I only want to be with you, in love. It was like dancing through a daydream. You never felt more alive and joyful. It was a moment of perfect beauty. And then, it was over. Butterflies have an extremely short life-span.

I may be a little crazy, but I believe more than a few of you out there would love to have that feeling again, short and sweet they may be. Why not go for it? Shake off the every day stuff. Do something different. Read a book. Dance, sing, meditate. Go somewhere strange. Count your blessings.
